Continuing to explore areas around painting and sculpture, a key part of my practice is time spent experimenting with prospective materials. This year has seen a distinct shift in my colour palette. Perhaps it is a response to the incredibly hot summer; my work has seen the colour drain to grey, black and white, and new, smoother textures are beginning to appear in the work too.

My approach continues to be one of speculative making, grounded in material experimentation. The inclusion of paper treated with Konnyaku Powder (Japanese paper starch) has enabled me to make and include softer, twisted forms within the work that nevertheless remain centred around the body. Using a process unique to my practice, distemper-impregnated paper that has been waxed, painted and stitched remains my primary medium. These materials allow me to explore surface, skin and structure in ways that echo the physical and emotional landscape of the body.

Meditations on my Body Series

In the last few years my practice has shifted from dyed and painted textiles to pigment-impregnated paper. The physical process of fabrication—submerging the paper into warm glue and then manipulating it into shape whilst still warm and wet—is all part of the enjoyment. I describe these works as feeling-scapes of the body.

Using a process unique to my practice, these works are constructed with distemper-impregnated paper that has been waxed and stitched, forming objects that appear both durable and delicate. These materials allow me to explore surface, skin, and structure in ways that echo the physical and emotional landscape of the body.
